The Indian education system is one of the largest in the world, comprising more than 1.5 million schools, over 8 million teachers, and 250 million students. However, the socioeconomic disparities rampant in the country make it a challenging landscape to navigate—about 50% of adolescents do not complete their secondary education, and of those who do, a huge percentage are unable to achieve the academic success they have the potential for, largely due to lack of quality learning opportunities and mentorship.
In peri-urban areas, particularly among underserved communities, students face formidable challenges in pursuing STEM education. There is a dearth in educational infrastructure and learning material, and mathematics often becomes a particularly difficult subject to contend with. These gaps only exacerbate existing inequalities in our society, hindering the academic progress of countless young minds. Recognizing this prevalent issue, Make it Count! was founded in 2023 as a social initiative dedicated to addressing these significant barriers in mathematics education.
